Sayles (1989) “Leadership”

SAYLES, L. R. (1989).  LEADERSHIP – MANAGING IN REAL ORGANISATIONS.  2ND ED.  McGRAW HILLL INC., NEW YORK, NY.

  • KNOWLEDE OF HOW TO PLAN IS OFTEN MISSING!
  • FIND OUT WHAT MANAGERS SAY EBOUT THEIR WORK.
  • AND WHAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY DEALING WITH.
  • HOW ARE THEIR RELATIPONSHIPS, WHAT DO THEY SPEND TIME ON?
  • WHAT IS PREDICTABLE?
  • WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK IS SCARCE?
  • Authority must be earned
  • Build and maintain momentum
  • Handle confrontation and non-response
    • There will always be reasons why things can’t be done.  Part of job is to debunk those reasons AND get people thinking of solutions!
  • It’s also important to ‘manage up’.  We are not in a feudal hierarchy that requires mindless subordination – especially when we see something that does not work!!
  • Remember –there is always the opportunity to escalate – if the first boss does nothing, go to the next one!
  • Instilling confidence and giving feedback is important!
  • Encourage initiative
  • Change programs:
    • Intervention
    • Restructure
    • Re-equilibrate
    • Do this by participation of those involved!!
    • There is nothing wrong!  Just something not working or not working as well as it could, or the context / outcome has changed so the entity must change accordingly!
    • Triggers can include:
      • Recurring problems
      • High-amplitude problems
      • Spiralling problems
      • Polarisation
    • Be responsible for people’s natural response to change: it should not be!
    • Beware of over-exaggerating the benefits of this change!
    • Watch for unanticipated costs, dissention and plundering.
    • Change program design:
      • Problem identification
      • Formulation
      • Development and trial
      • Implementation
    • Take time to read the culture and how it’s likely to be received.
    • Project management is the vehicle for change.
    • Managerial attributes:
      • Initiative
      • Quickness
      • Perseverance
      • Flexibility
      • Dominance
      • Equanimity
      • Listening
      • Handle stress well
